Application Virtualization

VMware ThinApp 5.0

Is an application virtualization that isolates applications from their underlying operating systems; eliminate application conflict and streamline application delivery and management.

ThinApp is the tool which enables you to execute applications without being installed by vitalizing resources such as environment variables, files and Windows Registry keys.

Advantage of ThinApp’s

  • Run multiple versions of the application at the same time.
  • Eliminate application conflicts and streamline management.
  • Reduce IT support and help desk costs (reduce the management of provisioning, patching and updating applications and images).
  • Strengthen endpoint security
  • Increase workforce mobility

I will explain first installation of “VMware made ThinApp 5.0” and then vitalizing application using ThinApp

*Recommended fresh installed OS.

4- In this tutorial I will virtualize MS Office 2007, I will install MS Office2007 as usual and then run word, excel and power point to make sure everything is fine before postscan.TApp5C_05

5- Click “Postscan” inorder to rescan the registry and file system to assess the difference between postscan and prescan.

7- Create Active Directory Group and authorize the group to run this package (I will authorize every one), then from AD Group you can add member to the group.                 TApp5C_10

8- Follow self explanatory steps below.

Application virtualized now you can copy “\bin” folder or share the folder and create shortcut on target machines

TApp5C_22  TApp5C_23

you can register application using “thinreg”
copy “thinreg.exe” to destination server and then at the command prompt type

thinreg.exe “\\vApp\Office2007\bin\Microsoft Office Excel 2007.exe” /a /r

thinreg.exe “\\vApp\Office2007\bin\Microsoft Office Word 2007.exe” /a /r

thinreg.exe “\\vApp\Office2007\bin\Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.exe” /a /r

you can use this approach in

1- VDI implementations, create centralized application library.
2- easily upgrade Operating Systems since application isolated from OS.                           3- Prevent application conflict and run multiple version of application.
